Women and Youth Supporting Each Other, or WYSE, is a national mentorship organization and registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. WYSE is dedicated to strengthening the lives and communities of young women through a curriculum based, group, and one-on-one mentorship program. The program strives to address key issues that can contribute to a woman’s empowerment, including teen pregnancy prevention, conflict resolution, healthy lifestyle adoption, and future options awareness. USC's branch is the largest of the 11 universities nationwide and has provided hundreds of girls with the resources and support necessary to make informed, healthy decisions and take leadership roles in creating community change.
Each week, our mentors travel to three local middle schools to facilitate interactive, curriculum-based sessions on subjects ranging from self image to healthy relationships, birth control to STI's. Each participating seventh or eighth grade girl receives her own female USC mentor(s).
Outings in LA are a major part of our organization as they create bonds between the "mentees" and mentors, and foster a feeling of community among all our participants. Twice a semester, WYSE women from all three school sites gather for collective group outings to beaches, museums, or cultural events. Most recently, we had Future Options Day at USC's campus where WYSE alums, now in high school, shared advice and their experiences, mentees mapped out their futures, and we all were inspired by two amazing guest speakers. Additionally, at least once a month mentors bond with their mentees on one-on-one outings.
We also have weekly reflection meetings for mentors so that we can review past sessions, prepare for future sessions, and reflect on how we are doing and how we can be better.
